If Jimmie Johnson wins the championship & has a 3 peat, who's 3 peat is more impressive? Cale Yarborough's or?

May be...

  • tregosteevo nailed it.

It's like comparing apples and walnuts.

Two different eras, two different types of driving, two different types of cars.

Who's better, Richard Petty or Babe Ruth?

Cale's will probably stand out as the most difficult to obtain, and the first three peater.
  • JJ's is more cooler.... look at the era...the competition, the COT and compare it to the old days..
  • It is really hard to compare the two eras, but if I had to choose one it would be Jimmie Johnson.Back in the day, there were only a handful of full-time drivers to compete against for the championship and there were only a few of those full-time drivers that were the caliber of today's drivers. In short,it is more competitive these days.
  • Each is very impressive in its own way. Cale was the first to do it and did it against drivers like Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty, Bobby Allison, and Darrel Waltrip. Jimmie and the 48 team did it in two very different types of stock cars and did it battling some of the tightest competition in Nascar.
  • Jimmie Johnson's & why do think that. I am a fan of Jimmie Johnson & as well as Gordon, Kyle Busch, Kenseth but I personally don't care for the race for the championship
  • Cale! In my eyes Jimmie is on his way to his first legit cup title. There needs to be a rule that anyone caught cheating is eliminated from the chase! What does it tell the world that both championships he has were in seasons he was caught cheating?

Also Cale had to win in all season long not just the last 10!
  • Definietly Johnson. What he is about to do is far more impressive than Cale's 3 straight titles. Johnson is doing this when there are about 20-25 cars that can win every week whereas during Cale's run there were only about 8-10 that could win every week. The 48 team is phenomenal duirng the chase and the luck they have had is just incredible. Yesterday around lap 260 when a caution came out the 48 pitted and changed 4 tires, yet upon further inspection the previous tires on the car had a small cut on the right front and had that caution not come out he would have gone a lap down and not won the race. Thsi team has had great luck and it is bound to run out eventually but it wont stop where it doesnt prevent him from winning 3 in a row
  • both are very impressive
Cale crew had to be inventive ..because of limited technology at the time
Jimmy is just as impressive probably more because the cars today are suppose to be more equal
congrats JJ on a great season!!
  • i woud think JJs is more impressive because he has to race so many more races than Cale did
  • I would have to say Johnson because there is so much more competition today...............
  • Definitely Jimmie. It may not seem like it but the competition is sooooo much tougher than back then.
  • I think jimmie johnson's win is tougher because there is more competition now than then. I think it was on nascar now the other day they mentioned that when cale yarborough was competing there were only 10 guys running full time so cale had it easier. Let's hope jimmie johnson can do 4 in a row in 09'. I think jimmie might be the driver to break the 7 championship record from richard petty and dale sr.
  • As Kenny Wallace says it's like comparing apples to oranges. Not taking anything away from Cale's accomplishments but there is a lot closer competition now than there was when he won his 3 in a row. Not only that, there are many more full time drivers and teams now. I believe there were only 14 teams that were in all 30 races in 1976, 11 in 1977 and 12 in 1978. It was a different system and atmosphere in racing back then but he beat some awesome drivers also. I am bisased and think Jimmie's 3 in a row is tougher (I don't think it will be done again under the chase system) but Cale was a tremendous champion in his own right.
    3 STR8 N 08!!!
  • I don't know. I think Jimmie's is. Cause of the level of competition these days as well as the Chase (essentially the 2nd shot @ the Championship for the top 12).
  • Cale Yarborough. They came when crew chiefs and drivers could be creative and individuals, not the IROC vanilla NASCAR we have now. The teams can't even used a non-NASCAR approved car wax.

The so-called CHASE is a farce ! NASCAR is not baseball or basketball. WWF comes to mind. It wasn't broken before, why "improve" it.

The "ghost yellows" for "debris" is what has resulted, to bunch the field. We will never see a driver lap 40 to 41 cars and win a race-ever again. Brian France will see to that.chevy malibu theft system
