NASCAR wants to make more money, so they encourage it. Plus, racers love to race and they can probably learn something for the Cup Series. The difference in the two series is the car. Its a different size of engine and handling packages. The sport isn't exactly over flowing with eligible drivers. To get into these races you have to qualify. If you don't meet the qualifications, you don't race. Since there are car owners that need drivers, the guys from the Sprint Series drive for Nationwide car owners. It adds to their practice time and they get paid for it. Some compete in all three national touring series. The drivers get track time in the lesser series, while the Nationwide series is intended as like a stepping stone to the Cup series, where young guns and veterans alike can gain track time and/or experience. flipping though the channels today i see the nascar race on espn then realize its basically ever driver i know racing even though im pretty sure they will be racing tomorrow at daytona as well but in the 500.
Why do they let drivers do that, where in ever other sport the different series/leagues are to let more less skilled drivers/players compete.
Unless there are other differences idk about between sprint and nationwide series, see as how i watch maybe 5 hours of nascar a year. So why and how are they even allowed to drive in both Regardless of some of the opinions here, there is one underlying reason:
THEY LOVE TO RACE!!
All the other stuff (ticket sales, etc.) are just spinoff benefits. I've known many of them and that is the one common thread that ties them all together. The best example I ever knew is Kenny Schrader. If you put a lawn mower engine on a baby carriage, he'd race it!
If the teams, owners, sponsors and NASCAR get something out of it, too, great. But the bottom line still remains, they just love to race, and most - if not all - would race even if they didn't make the big bucks. They are (you'll pardon the pun) driven!
:o)) The Cup drivers usually do this to prepare for the Cup race on Sunday and sometimes just to have fun. But the main reason why NASCAR allows this is because it helps sells tickets to the Nationwide races. With some of the top Cup drivers in the field, I'm sure some of their fans would be willing to go to the Nationwide race to see their favorite driver. But I wish NASCAR didn't allow this. Carl Edwards is a contender in the Cup series, but has been racing full-time in Nationwide ever since he started. There are many young drivers like Landon Cassill, Bryan Clauson, and Chase Miller that deserve full-time rides and really could use the track time to gain experience. Why not? I have never looked at the Nationwide Series as a minor league series, at least not the way that say AAA baseball is to the MBL. It's just another series and yes it is one tier down from the Sprint Cup Series. This series is a mix of up and comers, grizzly veterans, and current "Cup" drivers. The cars are very different. The power and speed is roughly the same. The bodies are very different. Many of the components on the car are the same such as the wheels and tires. This may be the wrong forum, but man, I hate that Dish don't have Speed HD, does anyone know, or at least feels my pain? well it will be.. 24, 48,14,88,18or5 Chevy is the team to beat all of the HMS cars looked good so far then you add tony stewart to the mix . being they changed the right side tires due to the problems .. they might be a wild card in the mix .. the new tires might fit the setup better than the oned that were coming apart in the 125"s Truex won't push Jr, but Tony, or Mark will....
Give Truex a top ten, but he won't be close enough.. Stremme won't see the end (not from the track)... I'm going out on a limb but:

Busch was jumping in to relay info to the 20 team, and to help out the rookie Lagano. im watching practice on speed and what the hell did i miss Kyle's very good at communicating to a crew chief what the car is doing. He's helping Zippy get it to where it needs to be for Joey.
Joey doesn't have that experience yet. Helping to set up Joey's car, in Cup, and driving the Nationwide 20, for the point Championship..looking to cheat

Probably Stremme after what I've been seeing thus far this season. Stremme 7 Logano Actually, after the Shootout, it seems smart to avoid anyone named David. Same as it has been since he came Cup racing.

He helped cause the first crash in the shootout and the first crash (spinning Kurt Busch) in the first duel. But I love him anyway. Stay clear of Robby!

I actually really like the guy from what I am seeing in interviews and such but hasn't he crashed in every event this week so far...LOL! I agree with David Stremme. After his performance at the shootout, I am going to he cringing whenever Jamie or Bobby goes near him. It always seems like the inevitable happens to them. Scott Speed, I don't like his attitude and I bet he will just be a show off on the track if he ever gets the chance. John "Crash" Andretti (if he finds a ride) and Robby Gordon. I agree with you that it will be David Stremme. Yeah, add JPM to last year's list. Seems like he was wrecking every other week, and collecting up good cars with him. He's likely calmed down a little, but Logano might just wear that tiarra this year. They get the setup right for him eventually, but its clear he isn't comfortable in Tony's car yet. Did you see him in practice today? He really had his hands full. David Gilliland cut his own throat last year with his poor decision at Watkin's Glen and inexcusable move on Montoya at Texas. He was a feel good story, won a race in an unsponsored car in the Busch Series but his lack of self control appears to have black balled him in the cup series, at least it has for now.
edit: Oops, I read the question wrong. In the Daytona 500 the 2 drivers I would avoid racing around are David Stremme and Greg Biffle. How many times can you wreck during Speedweek? If it's one of those 2 guys the answer is as many as it takes to park it in the garage LOL I really like Greg but might have to sit him on my fantasy team this week.
4's FINE N 09!!!! The human wrecking ball....Juan Pablo Montoya. Scott Speed and Michael Waltrip. anybody with yellow tap on their bumpers for starters I actually think that people will be avoiding Joey Logano or Scott Speed. All things considered, I just don't think they have enough experience to be running with the big guys. Unfortunately I think Scott Speed will be the one. And you always have to watch out for Robby Gordon and Waltrip.
And no offense but always I get a little nervous when Kevins around Elliot. Not because of anything he does, but it just seems like the poor guy attracts trouble, and Kevin does that good enough on his own! LOL Robby Gordon cant finish a race without causing an accident After seeing him in the shootout and the duels I am a little concerned about Greg Biffle.....he's been in EVERY caution so far this year.

I think it was a great finish but he pretty much blocked the whole frikin track its annoying he's my favorite and i wont lie i would love to see bill or mark martin win the 500 but im glad he won today.... 2009 champ.... kyle busch i dont like him, but he did a good job blocking mark, he had guys comin from both sides, so good job I'm not a fan of Busch. He won. If it was the 500 I don't think he would have. Calling him a champion? I don't think so. He's lucky he didn't get spun around in turn four. Also Earnhardt and Harvick came from the back to finish in the top ten. They all backed off to be sure each had the same car to start Sunday. Nope.

Go Dale Jr & Hms I can't hate on anyone that wins in exciting fasion. The fact that it was Kyle was just icing on the cake. Kyle was awesome as was Jeff. Lets not jump the gun on the Kyle winning the Championship. I was all gung ho last season and look what happened that only JINX's it.

Also the first race he won in a year and a half! There is no reason for Gordon to cheat in this race. Track position means virtually nothing here, you can go from last to first in couple laps and Viceversa. Besides Gordon is automatically locked into this race regardless what happens. How cool is it two of the drivers who went winless last year win two of the first races of the season! Great finish and Im stoked for the 2nd. Les get it on!! Happy for Jeff and his team. Glad for Scott Riggs and Tommy Baldwin. All I'm glad is Truex starts on the Pole for Daytona 500!

I'm mainly a fan of Fernando Alonso followed by Robert Kubica and Sebastian Vettel. Robert Kubica, is a good driver, I think that this Championship he wins a lot of GPs. BMW has working in his car since half of last Championship, and they have the KERS system very evolved, in short, BMW in general is very evolved.
I donВґt say that they wins Championship, but the give us a lot of suprises.
(Sorry, i spanish, i donВґt have good english, i need to practice.) I am big fan of Kubica but it is too bad he drives the hated BMW (I just f%$^#$ hate BMW's). I am also a big Raikkonen fan. I would have to say that that my favorite recent driver is Rubens -- he is just such a likable bloke and that goofy smile is infectious. I have a lot of respect for Alonso the way he improved that car last season was eye-opening.
Ok so I have named like 20% of the drivers in F1 LOL but that is the way I see it. I'm Australian so Mark Webber is my obvious choice. He has just completed his first test in the new RB5 and was only 3-4 seconds off Kovalanien's pace in the new Mclaren. Although Vettle was on standby, Mark managed 85 laps so I think that he is going to have a promising year after his accident last year. Add to the fact he had surgery to remove pins from his leg last week. Massa is a nice guy and all but Hamilton is more of a fighter and a racer than the Brazilian will ever be.flying with a cold

I've always had a soft spot for the underdog, including independent drivers. Any driver with a hard row to hoe gets extra attention from me, thats how I originally became a Harvick fan, kid had some huge shoes to step into.
One of my favorite drivers of all time is Morgon Shephard. Watching him pull up to a track with his pickup pulling his car on a trailer next to all those semi's with "Racing for Jesus" painted on the hood brings a whole new meaning to independent. I'll stand and scream at the top of my lungs for that man no matter what place he's starting or finishing. I wouldn't say I have "more" respect. But respect? yeah, sure. I always pull for the underdog I have always respected independent drivers. It is great to see more of them now! As opposed to the Hendricks, Roush, and other multi-car teams? Everyone in racing loves and respects the independent racer...
Alan Kulwicki was one of the most popular Champions in NASCAR
history, because he came along at a time it was considered almost
impossible for an independent to go up against the big teams..
He turned down offers from some of the top teams to start a team of his own, and was able to beat them without any of the resources they had..
He was not like the current crop of independents because he could have had a job with a top team, but he chose to be an independent owner/driver...
BTW, you may not start a race without a pit crew anymore...
The ones you see now can't get a job, so they are attempting to create one...
But NASCAR will start a full field at every race even if they need to invest in the teams to do it.. I have respect for anyone that races no matter who they are. I have a great deal of respect for them, just not when the pull the old "start and park". I always had a ton of respect for them. I do. i sure do. someone on tv said, it's just like the good old days like they used to be. Heck yes! My favorite driver is my favorite because he is independent. One man owner driver with a great crew behind him. Robby Gordon may not be the best in nascar and may make a lot of people mad; but when your out there doing it by yourself in a big money world, it is hard and that demands respect. My comrades here at the Nation have expressed my feeling's so eloquently I can only concur. I salute all men and women in uniform. I would have had to work at 4 o'clock if I didn't take off. In fact I took off Saturday and Sunday also to boot. This is my weekend and if the co-workers don't like it, too bad.

I live in Ireland so the Duels air at around 10PM (GMT) so I dont need to take work or college off :) My work week is Sunday thru Wednesday, so I will have Thursday off to watch the duels. I had to request Sunday off though, no way I was missing Daytona!

Can't tell you how proud to have Army as a sponsor for my favorite driver! Lenny, since I have to work on Sunday (UGH!) I have decided to take Thurs off. So I'll be able to catch the duels which I am excited about...I haven't got to watch them live in about 3 years. It stinks that I won't be able to watch all of the 500 but I will be able to catch about the last half. We always set Easter in my store the day after Valentines...so I have to be there to set it...shame it landed on the day of the 500 this year. Good luck to Brax!!! We are still praying for him every day.

order for daytona 500 on sunday? Looked on nascar.com can't find it. Time trials were yesterday. Martin Truex Jr took the pole and Mark Martin joins him on the front row in the 500. The rest of the qualifying times set the lineup for the The Gatorade duel 150's, which set the rest of the field, and they start Thursday at 2 Eastern on Speed.

I would see how my car handles in traffic and in the draft.
I would only go for the win if the situation presented itself without doing anything crazy. Alway's go for the victory, second place is the first loser. I'd run the hell out of that car and if it didn't make it then tell Rick Hendrick to yank one of Jimmie Johnson's backup cars and paint it up for me. He's got plenty of cars if I was to run out. Mark is a top shelf competitor. He won't sandbag, and neither would I.
EDIT: I missed that "and". So, same goes for Truex. They'll both go for it.
EDIT: They DO have somthing to lose. If the car gets wrecked beyond repair, and they have to switch to a back-up car, they go to the back of the field in the 500. On the other hand, if they blow an engine, they are allowed to change engines between the 150's and the 500 without penalty.
If the go-or-go-home guys that are not yet locked in the field by qualifying time wreck or blow an engine, well, they go home. Go for the win, they literally have nothing to lose! man if you got the car go for the win!winning any race here is huge. I would run hard and try to finish as high as possible without doing anything crazy. If anything, it's the best practice session of the week so use it. So what if you crash. Starting up front is no big advantage at Daytona anyway. I would run it as hard as I could for the win. More wins(points or not) is whats its about. Martin Truex Jr. won the pole with Mark Martin coming in second. The non-top 35 teams that locked themselves in were Tony Stewart, Travis Kvapil & Bill Elliott, meaning that Terry Labonte is a lock as well cause he would have the past champions provisional. Truex Jr won the pole. Only saw bits and pieces so not sure how Sadler did yet. Seems like yesterday was the day to take care of sick kids. I missed that part on the Shootout, but that is hilarious! I was so upset during the 500 when Bobby got taken out. But, of course, fan favorite Sadler was taken out, my mom's fav Jr. was taken out and my hubby's fav, Harvick, won! I was real salty, though.

Okay here I go again, sorry guys but I've got to say it again, people hate him because he's popular, they hate him cause they think he should be his dad and not his own man, well I've got news for y'all he is his own person he isn't and isn't trying to be his dad. All he wants is to be his self and can someone tell me what's wrong with that? They also hate him because his fans think he's great well the last time I checked no matter who you root for you do think they are great. So once again what's wrong with that? Personally, I like the kid. He strikes me as a normal Good ol' boy who happens to have some cash and a famous last name... and likes to drive fast and go left. What do you think of the new Subway paint scheme for Carl? Or the sponsorship in general? I'm not a big fan of the paint scheme, but I think Carl Edwards and Subway is a perfect fit. What about you? Anyways yes I think it's a great fit! Sure why not? He got the body for it lol, but I don't know why they decided to sponsor Smoke before. i thought it was distinct, so the paint worked in that effect I don't like the paint scheme at all. As far as the sponsorship in general, meh... money is money. The only sponsorship I can say would 'fit' Edwards would be if TVLand sponsored him with a big picture of Mr. Ed on his hood. The paint scheme is okay. What I find amusing is the fact that Office Depot, that used to sponsor Carl is now Tony's sponsor and that Subway, that used to sponsor Tony is now sponsoring Carl.how to fiberglass speakerbox

I will pick Logano, I think he has better equipment. Logano all the way. Look at how he has won in nearly everything he has tried. The kid is a natural talent. Who was ahead when they wrecked together?? Well if David stays away from them they both should do okay. : P
I'm picking Speed just becuase I like him more though. I will go with Logano because I think he will have access to better equipment and personnel. Logano. Speed looks like he is still trying to grasp what a stock car is. logano much better ride in the 20 Scott Speed. Logano will turn out to be another Casey Atwood. honestly, i think that might turn out to be the best/closest battle of the year--probably even better than the championship. i like both of 'em, so as long as they both do well, i'm happy. I'm going to have to go with Logano. Gibbs has been grooming him for awhile now and as has already been mentioned he's got access to better equipment (read: cashflow)
I've taken an instant dislike to Speed, I'm not sure why. Felt the same way about the Busch brothers when they hit the scene and so far my opinions on them haven't changed much. Depends on track i say...
But im picking Scott Speed because he has a fun attitude, especially with that inccident with Ricky Steinhouse last year. That made me like him even more. Plus hes been the only American Formula 1 driver in recent years. Soo C"MON people cheer him on!!!

Let's just say I think Logano will produce less scrap metal than Speed lol Hmm..Speed, but not by much. Logano. I like Speed, but he has the whole hyped up on Mountain Dew thing going on which makes me think he might be more sporadic and prone to accidents. Logano......That Scott Speed Guy trips me out....He is a weird one, I think there is somethin about him thats not right.....LOL...I dont know maybe he's just tryin too hard to be funny or somethin!!!!
GO HARVICK & RCR!!!!! Logano for me....and it really sucked that they were both taken out so early last night. I would have loved to seen where they finished had they been able to finish the race. Scott Speed who will do better? Well, Speed has mucho experience including F-1. However, Logano is some kind of vunderkind.
Even with the lack of experience, I'd give the nod to Logano, but only by a hair. Ought to be interesting, at least. I'm thinking Joey Logano is going to do better because I think that he is more experienced or has become a better driver and he also has a good crew chief and owner and I'm actually expecting him to do great things! I'm ready. I am pretty happy about it Jamie McMurray finished 2nd and Carl Edwards finished 7th so it was a Pretty good race I guess! I wish David Ragan would have got to finish the race I think he could have possible won it! I am ready for the 500 now! i'm preety satisfied with the performence of jeff gordon my faviriot and sorta glad that jimmie johnson wiped out and that logano shouldn't even be in nascar he's way to young I AM SOOO HAPPY!! I thought it was a exciting race, kept me glued to the tv all night.
Now lets go to Daytona 500. WHere it all begins. Wanted Jeff to win - but oh well, this is just the begining...... I very unhappy. The win should have gone to Jamie because he was in the lead on the scoring loop when the caution came out. It's the same thing they did to Martin at daytona in 2007. But I am getting over it. I'm ready for the actual race next week. Very. Kevin never quit. Was in there at the right moment. The Bud Shootout has to have a little luck to win it. Not too happy. Jeff shoulda had that one. But I guess he's saving his stuff for next weekend. But he(double hockey sticks) yeah I'm glad that the season has started! Boggity Boggity Boggity Boys.... let's go racing!! That was a wild race and a GREAT start to the racing season!!! Pissed it ok. at least a Chevy won. could have been worse. Now we got the Gatorade duel 125's on thursday then the 500 next sunday .. Menard and Speed both wrecked... gimme a decent Qualifying Spot tomorrow and Hand Me the Duels. I am happy that it was a great race with a great finish.Not so much excited about the winner lol. Kevin has matured so much since he took over that ride. I'm so excited for him! He never gave up tonight and deserved that win. I'm very happy! "Happy" is my favorite active driver and it was so awesome to see him back in Victory Lane. Hopefully he will be there next Sunday as well.
What a finish that was! I was hoping Gordon would win right there at the end, but I'm definitely happy for Kevin. Kevin hasn't won in a while, so I'm glad for him and his fans. I know it wasn't a points race, but it's tough to win a race these days. Any kind of win is worth celebrating. I'm proud that my driver was competitive all night long after starting in the back. That was a good race and hopefully it will be the start to a great season. I always like to see Kevin Harvick win.He is definitely one of my favorites.He and his wife just seem like such down to earth people. i be mad cuz jr lose I am happy that Happy won. It has been a long time coming and he has started this season wonderful.
Would have been thrilled if Tony had won. I think he did excellent, first race as owner/driver. I was hoping a Chevy would win, Tony's Chevy. Oh well, there are more chances coming. and Kevin has won, I am very happy. How about you? I'm pretty happy. Kinda dissapointed Jeff didn't win but it's nice to see him running up front. The Shootout was exciting. Those last 10 laps were intense. I wasn't expecting Harvick to sneak up and win the race. I'm happy Kevin won, that was pretty cool how he came from nowhere to win and he managed to avoid almost every wreck out there tonight, he did good! congrats to his fans for a great start of the season!
