How do you feel about the open wheelers in Nascar?

May be...

  • with the exception of the andretis none of those you mention were really sucessful in open wheel the phenemenon now is that top open wheel drivers are coming over to nascar and it hink thats why its such a big deal they arent washed up either they are coming over in their primes.
  • I don't mind them at all. Let 'em come and race, and if they prove they can be competitive, they're fine by me. I just don't want the traditional regional series racers to miss out on opportunities because sponsors are attracted to the "star power" of some of the open wheelers. And, yeah, they should race a full season in NCTS or Nationwide first. However, I don't think NASCAR needs these open wheel guys to improve it's image. NASCAR has been around for 60 years, and it doesn't need open wheel guys to convince ignorant bashers that it's a legitimate and credible sport.
  • I am fine with it. However I think that they should be required to run at least half the season in the Nationwide Series BEFORE running in the Sprint Cup. At least that way they can get a feel for the handeling, how much heavier, & the different driving style involved in stock car racing.

I don't care how accomplished they are in their series or any other open wheel series. NO ONE should just be thrown into a stock car without some prior stock car expreience. Besides I believe that racing the Nationwide Series first would give them a much better chance at actually qualifying for a cup race. I mean you've got to qualify to race right?

And like stated, they have been soo hyped up in the media that all anyone can talk about is their accomplishments in the open wheel series. They get thrown into the Cup series head first & then half of them can't even run a car 2 laps to qualify for half the races. And I believe it is their lack of experience in the stock car.

Other than that I really counldn't care either way.
  • No problems. It seems though, these guys could have used more prep time in trucks or Nationwide rather than jumping straight to "cup". JPM is really showing how talented he is when you look at how abysmal the others have done so far. I would love to see what he could do in some better equipment.
  • Same way Ive felt for 25 years . Who cares.

    Mario Andretti
    AJ Foyt
    Tony Stewart
    Robbie Gordon
    John Andretti
    Johnny Rutherford
    Dan Gurny

If you want to count sprint cars and Go Karts we can go on and on. It's nothing new. I don't see what all the "hubub" is about. Besides they are all great race car drivers. Especially if you have followed other series of racing throughout your life.
  • I have no problem at all with them coming over.. The last few that have come over aren't doing that great...Sure come on over..I've got no problem with it..
  • I feel like a pretty woman walking through a mens maximum security prison. What do you mean "how do you feel". Men racing in NASCAR doesn't make me emotional. I expect these things from motorsport competition. Men who compete in auto racing are always thriving for the ultimate competition. Can you blame them? The "open wheelers", I mean. The men men who you suspect to evoke feeling into their viewers. They were here before Toyota. If you really wanna see someone gush, ask them how Toyota makes them feel. Anyone who races in a cup race, is just another driver. That's all. Nothing to get excited about.
  • I'm all for it. The more diversity we have, the better. These open-wheelers, such as Montoya, Carpentier, and Franchitti are GREAT for our sport's image. We have been stuck in the "dark ages" for a long time in the eyes of the general public. Having World-Champion drivers, such as Montoya and Franchitti, WANT to come over to our sport does a lot to shut up the average individual who still thinks we are a bunch of sweaty inbred rednecks driving in circles. Having these guys saying that this stock car stuff is a lot harder than it looks adds quite a bit of credibility to our sport as well.
  • let them race!!
  • with the exception of juan pablo WRECKO i think they have done a good job. it takes a totally different driving style and personality to race in nascar as opposed to open-wheel. Juan just doesnt have the skills and his personality is about as comfortable as sand paper
you get a bad apple every once in a while so let them race
  • I also believe they should drive in the nationwide series first.
  • The current ones were overhyped, it appears. In their defense, many of the stock car regulars are also struggling with the handling of the COT on the downforce tracks. They are still decent drivers, they just need to acclimate to all the changes and tracks they have never seen before.
  • Doesn't bother me a bit. If they can quality then I say let 'em go for it.
  • Got no problem with it. If they've got what it takes to win, come on over. The more, the merrier!
No cry babies, though. NASCAR's already got enough of them.
  • Bring 'em on. Right now they aren't doing so hot.
  • A big AMEN to every answer so far. I am surprised though. When I first saw the question I figured the haters would be out en masse. I'm lovin the lack of foolishness.
  • How I feel can be summed up in 3 words;
    Let 'em race!!!
  • People seem to forget that there were,,,

    Robby Gordon,
    Tony Stewart,

    The Andretti's,

A lot of past drivers came from open wheel, just not with as much fanfare and hype. Without 183,000 cable channels to choose from and the Internet to search most people would probably not know more than 5 or 6 drivers anyway.
