When was the first event held at Pheonix International Raceway, and who was the winner?

Alan Kulwicki in 1988. This was the first time he did his Polish Victory Lap (driving the track clockwise).

The first cup series race at Phoenix International Raceway was held on November 6, 1988. The Checker 500 was the 2nd to the last race of the year and was won by the late Alan Kulwicki. Terry Labonte, Davey Allison, Bill Elliott and Rusty Wallace rounded out the top 5 and were the only other cars on the lead lap at the finish. After the race Awesome Bill had a 79 point advantage over Rusty and went on to win his only NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship by a mere 24 points!
