Is nascar really a sport?

May be...

  • Yes....it is a sport. And to those who think it isn't...keep saying it, we can't hear you over the roar of the engines!
  • Certainly, as is table tennis and synchronized swimming.
  • People also used to say the world was flat. It is a sport. If you think not, look up 'ignorance' in the dictionary.
  • Of course, it is. Most of these guys train very hard to be able to withstand the conditions inside the car. Not only are you contending with high temperatures, but also keeping control of the car requires a great deal of strength. And if it's handling poorly, that becomes even more of a struggle. No, these guys are not running on foot. However, look at most other sports. There are time outs and breaks. Even under caution, the driver does not really have a break. It isn't as if he can jump out and stretch or anything. No one questions whether football is a sport, but look at the condition of so many of those guys. They are so fat (I know there's also muscle there) that they can only make one or two consecutive plays. A Nascar race is something like a marathon in that you have to be in good enough shape to go the whole distance.
  • Yes it takes a lot of skill and it is filled with action and contact. It is a sport for sure. Not all sports have to have balls.
  • no.. i cant understand peoples fascination with it either.. how enjoyable is it to watch cars go around in circles for hours?? or as a driver, driving in a circle for 200+ laps.. zzzzzzz... change the track or go drag racing.. more challenge there..
  • It's a sport-plus death is a real possibility each race for the drivers and fans. You don't think driving for 3 1/2 hours at 190 mph bumper to bumper restrained in a seat so you can't move in a car that's 120-140 degrees F takes an athlete?
  • yes. If someone did not say deserves to get beat up by redneck.
  • Same answer to a very old question. Yes, NASCAR is a sport and there are over 75 million fans in the US alone that will tell you the same thing.
  • Yes my friend, NASCAR is a sport. These drives have a skill. The stock car's they drive handle nothing like a normal car that you and I drive on the highway. They also drive these things at 195mph. Things look diffrenet at the speed you know. Then there is the heat. The 800hp engine gives off massive heat. At times, drivers sit in 120 degree race cars for three hours. That is why drives work out in greenhouses or heated gym's so they can adjust to the extreame heat. Last, the car weigh's in at 3400 pounds...meaning these guy's have to control a 3400 pound car at 195 mph in a 120 degree enviorment for up to four hours...plus still be able to focus on passing cars and coming up with pit stratagey. There is a test you can do. Take an object and hold it out in front of you for as long as you can. If you can hold it there for about three hours without getting tired then congradulations! Your a race car driver! This simulates holding the steering wheel. Great question, hope this answer is what you were looking for. Enjoy the races!
  • If it isn't something that is physically exerting and shows what your body can do, I don't consider it a sport.
It's just a waste of gas and clean air.
  • of course it is it is a racing sport
  • Yes. Everyone competes on the same track at the same time unlike hunting where the animal does not have a gun.
  • if it isnt I would like to see a regualr Joe go and run his car in to a 30 degree turn at 190 mph with bald tires and see if he can get through the corner without spinning out or hitting the wall.
  • Not only is NASCAR a sport, but NASCAR is THE sport!!!!

    GO 24!!!!
  • hell no it isn't! it is just people driving in circles. but marching band is more of a sport.

    lilaudrey:
i play baseball and i throw a 95 mile an hour fast ball that will break your bat and i have a 90 mile an hour curveball/screwball that will break your nose.

yes i'm in 8th grade but i still play as if i was a senior in the band. and i still have friends on the football team, baseball and track.
  • Yes it is. You found it under the sports section of yahoo answers genius.
  • some people say yes, some say no....what do you say?
  • Some people say NASCAR isn’t a real sport, and yet this is a place where real men strap into 800 horsepower beasts for 4 hours in 110 degree temperatures at 200 miles an hour. Where families, rivalries, patriotism, and history all come together in a bumper-to-bumper, shoulder-to-shoulder, coast-to-coast, blaze of glory. What’s more real than that?
  • If you've ever gone to a NASCAR race live, you'd understand how much of a sport it is, motorsports that is. Most of these drivers are in better shape than you are, I'd bet. You want to talk about physical exertion, these guys sweat off 5 to 10 lbs during a race, hold a steering wheel directly in front of them for four hours, manhandle a 3400 lb vehicle through 3 g's in a corner using nothing but their arms at 170+ mph. Now tell me how that's not physically draining even if you are in the best of shape?
  • of course it is, it shouldnt matter what other people think aboot it and you should go with whatever you feel it is.

ps. you were practicing your tuba when i answered this
  • Anything that requires a person to sit in a 200 degree oven for 4 or 5 hours while straining their mind and body to manipulate a 3200 pound car around a track at 200 miles an hour all the while knowing if this car breaks or someone including myself make a mistake I may be killed or kill someone else " IS A SPORT ". A lot of people who comment that it is not a sport have most likely never been in a car even at 100 miles and hour through a corner. Most of you would crap your pants. Also as far as wasting gas and polluting the air ? LOL these cars are so well tuned and maintained that they produce less emmisions then almost all cars on the road. Your daddy's lawn mower pollutes 10 times more then any Nascar Stock Car.
  • To me there are sports, and there are athletic activities.

MY definition of sport - it must have an unbiased way of determining a winner (score points, fastest time, cross the line first, etc.)

It must have some way of head to head competition, and/or a defense.

So, anything that the outcome is solely determined by a judge is just an athletic activity (gymnastics, olympic diving, ice skating, etc.). It takes very talented, skilled, trained individuals to perform it, but not a sport in my book.

Anything lacking a true defense (golf) is just an athletic activity, not a sport.

NASCAR takes a lot of skill, strength, endurance, ability to think and react quickly, and has defensive maneuvers - so yes, in my book, NASCAR is a sport.
  • Of Course it is a Sport...
hmm Looks like we got Our Great 8th Grade Band Member back being his usual self.
  • It's not in the olympics, so it's not a sport. good enough for me.
  • Oh yeah!!!
    Go Marcos! (obviously I'm Australian)

  • Yes I think it is. Is horse racing, dog racing etc?. The whole crew needs to be in great phy. shape.
  • Yes,it is a sport

Here's what 500 laps at Martinsville can do to an athlete

  • Asking a stupid question like that deserves a stupid answer. You must be for the back hills of Kentucky with your grade 3 education.
  • I could ask you the same question about football, soccer, basketball, hockey, baseball, tennis, pool, etc.
  • NASCAR is a family-owned and operated business that sanctions and governs multiple auto racing "sports" events
  • people who say no obviously do not watch or obviously are too stupid to understand its way more than riding around in a circle all day. I say go to one of the nascar driving schools, you would probably sh** on yourself.data received in unknown format 0x1505
