Which driver so far is looking like they could win a championship in '09?

It's either gonna be Jeff Gordon or Kurt Busch.

I think it is to early to tell. Too many factors have yet to play out. JJ hasn't had a run yet and we all know he will and Mark, Tony ,Jeff and Kyle are all strong not to be contenders. It will make for an interesting summer!

Too early to tell but T. Stewart is real consistent with his top 5 finishes.

With the exception of Dale Jr, it is hard to bet against the HMS drivers. No offense to Kyle Busch fans, but he has that win or finish in the 30s attitude. You need to be more consistent to win championships. Until Jimmie Johnson loses one, he will be my pick.

With the points system like this there is no telling. The first year they changed the points system Jeff Gordon had a demanding lead and probably would have won the championship but he was no where near winning after the points reset for the last 10 races. Last year Kyle Busch was winning many races and was consistently up front but as soon as the chase started he faded out. So I say there is never any telling until a few races after the points reset but that is just my opinion.

Fluffy, it might still be a tad too early, but all of the guys in the top 15 have a clear shot. My favorite, Mark Martin, took only 4 races to drop to 34th, but has climbed up from there to 11th in just 6 races, with 2 wins, 3 top 5's, 6 top 10's and 3 poles on his scorecard for the season. Not too shabby, when you figure in the dismal start he had. He seems to have the momentum, drive, equipment and experience to pull it off his year. I just hope all of his bad luck & equipment failures are behind him. Mark's stats linked below.

EDIT: yes, I know he got collected in the lap 6 wreck at 'Dega, but again, it wasn't his fault, he was COLLECTED in the first "Big One".

EDIT (2): I agree about the "reset", but as long as he doesn't have the sour finishes that Shrub had last year after the reset, he'll be fine. Shrub had bad luck after the chase started, compounded by a few poor strategy calls, which led to an insurmountable defecit, 80 advantage points go away fast when you have a run of bad luck early in the chase. Kyle's stats for last year are the second link.

Jeff Gordon is the only one I see who is consistently in the top 5 or top 10 near the end of races.
I also think he has learned some things and will be ready to step up for the chase.

Johnson and, Johnson. It would be cool though if teammate Martin would take it (WOW-50! Martin's the man!)

It might be a little early yet, but the way this season has been going, I'd have to say Smoke. He's got that desire. Any of the top 15 do, but Smoke is doing awesome for a "new team". Then again, you wouldn't expect anything less of him. :)
