Will the 88 be better?

May be...

  • Whitesell has been a part of seven championship teams, while Mcgrew won a Nationwide championship.

My main concern is how much these guys know about the COT, since both of them served as crew chiefs with the old cars. But, still, being part of championship teams, these guys should be able to bring something to the table, and turn things around. Plus, Rick Hendrick has faith in them, which says a lot.

I think Rex Stump and Tom Stewart will also be crucial to the success of the 88.

The four of them collectively should be able to turn the 88 around if for no other reason than the 88's performance was so poor.
  • ...as long as Junior does not try to predict what they are doing.
    Hope it helps some.
  • only time will tell.
  • They still say McGrew is the interim crew chief, so who the heck are they looking at to be full time? Or are they so lost on who should lead that team Rick can't make a decision?.. This is bum-fuzzling to me, Rick has always had his crap together and made the decisions he needed to make, they should've had a good replacement in line before making this change in my opinion.

Will he be better? Not right away, No. With time and the right person though, there is no telling how good they can do. I'll say this though, It can't get much worse for them, so the only place to go is up.
  • Only if Dale gets his head out of the clouds and can stay focused.
  • I am not just bashing Jr. but I think alot of the problem with the team is Jr. He is not focused on racing. I think he needs to look at himself and rededicate himself to the sport if he wants to do really good. It's easy to blame it on the crew chief or the equipment but they have went through crew chief changes before with no improvement. They have the best equipment in Nascar now with no improvement. So there is on factor that has always been the same. The driver. Until he gets focused on racing he will not see a significant improvement. He may get going for a short period of time but he will not have any long term gain.
  • I am with Nascar Chick, give em about 5 races lets see if their is a improvement.
  • The 88 maybe better, but it still has the stigma of having a mediocre driver behind the wheel.
Better or the same is almost guaranteed (Can you do worse than sucks?)

...One thing for sure, Lemming Nation will have to step up their game in the excuse department if he doesn't do better.
  • I don't think that the situation can get much worse !

    H E N D R I C K~M O T O R S P O R T S~R U L E S ! ! ! ! !
  • With the crew chief change, Whitesell this week and then McGrew taking charge of the 88 next week, will there be better performance out of the team?
  • no your looking at like you have a richard petty behind the wheel you dont and never will jr may very well be the poster child of nascar but he will naver win a champ
  • It is safe to say that they can't be much worse!
  • I think they will. I hope they do because if the team still stinks then it is dale jr that's bad.
  • I'd say so. I mean he finished 40th last week so it's hard for him to get much worse than that barring an accident early in the race. But overall, it may not be much better.
  • If they can find someone who can communicate with Jr. better, then Yes there will be improvement.
  • Only if they make a total change including the driver of the 88. Maybe Junior Johnson or Ned Jarret would have a better chance of finishing in the top ten.
  • I wouldn't expect a big improvement right away. He will have to develop a relationship with a new crew chief so having a new one for this week and then again next week will make it difficult.

Then Mc Grew is only interim crew chief meaning Hendrick is still looking for a permanent replacement.
  • Most of the comments on here sum it up pretty well. It would be tough for him to do much worse unless his engine blows up in the first dozen laps. New crew chief was the frst step. Dale regaining his focus, desire, concentration, that is the second step. Without improvement on his part, this will all be for nothing. I hope this was a good wake up call for him.
  • Hard to say. I think he will, but I'll give it 5 races, then tell you how it goes...
  • Seems like the 88 car isnt doing so well.. not the driver! I have nooo idea what in the world is wrong with his car!!
  • There may not be an immediate change. Evidently according to this article http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cg... Rick seems to imply that these are only "short term solutions" and that he has not yet decided on a long term solution as to who will be crew chief.
  • They may show some improvement just because it's hard to get any worse. I hope everyone is happy now that Tony Jr. is gone. The driver didn't help him out any between making vague complaints about what was wrong with the car and missing his pit box, speeding on pit road, etc. Unless the new chief is the boss, things will not get better. Do you ever hear Jimmie Johnson bossing Chad Knaus? No, because he understands what his role is in the big picture. Even someone as headstrong as Kyle Busch defers to the judgment of Steve Addington.integrated atsc tuner
