Has any driver won a NASCAR cup race with an automatic transmission?

May be...

  • OK first of all to all those that said NASCAR doesn't use automatic transmissions (or laughed at this question), I just want to let you know your ignorance is showing.

As for the question read the following:
According to Bill France, no car with an automatic transmission has ever placed in the money in a NASCAR event, though many have been entered since the No-Left-Foot Polka became Detroit’s theme song. All top racing Olds and Caddies have synchromesh transmissions. According to Daytona Beach time trials, synchromesh Caddies are more than five miles an hour faster than those with Hydra-Matic. (Thought you’d like to know.)
  • I've never heard of it. Doesn't mean it hasn't happened but I've never heard of it. Heat would be the number one problem with an automatic transmission. The cars generate so much heat that they would probably cause an automatic transmission to fail. It would also limit the amount of tape they could put on the grills. It would be okay for a short run but an endurance race of 500 miles would be very hard on the transmission.

I would like to see automatic transmissions used on the road courses.
  • If someone did who was it ?
  • they don't have Automatic trannys.
  • Thanks for the laugh, I do not thing they allow Auto T on the NASCAR circuit.
  • They do not race with auto transmissions in NASCAR.
  • Nobody has ever won a CUP race but the old Caddies and Oldsmobiles had automatic transmissions.

Some cars with performance automatic transmissions (Turbo 350 in Chevys) are used at local NASCAR tracks.
  • I believe manual was the only option as far as transmissions when NASCAR started. Since then of course automatic has been developed but NASCAR race cars have never been (nor will ever be) equipped with automatic transmissions
  • Autos are too slow, I wouldn't imagine any team would use them. It's possible maybe they were used in the 40's and 50's but not likely. Maybe someone else knows.notebook fan site
