I need a cleaning fish or creature for my mini-aquarium.?

May be...

  • I have a mini aquarium (which holds approximately 2.5 gallons) which i had just bought yesterday. I put in there 4 goldfishes. i noticed today that the water is murky for all the fish poo (or algae, or whatever it is) that has accumulated since yesterday. I am way too busy to change the water and clean the tank. So here are my questions:

    1. What creature that i can put in there to clean the tank? i heard that a plec would be nice, but wouldn't that take much space for a 2.5 gallon tank?

    2. is it bad for my goldfishes if i change the water often?

    3. do i need to constantly turn on my air pump?

    4. how do i stop my cats from oggling with my mini-aqarium?
  • 1. Algae eaters (pacostumus) are your best bet, but you can also get a small bottom feeder that would eat the gunk of the tank floor. Also do you have a filter running in your tank? If not I strongly suggest one that will clean up your tank no problem.

2.I think it can mess your fish up change water to often because of the constent temp. change.

3.You don't have to have an air pump if you have a filter that pushes air down into the water that will work fine. Your fish won't dye with out one, but they will be more lively if you add the air in for them.

    4. There isn't much you can do to stop your cats from having tastey thoughts about your fish:) just make sure your lids a well secured so that cats can't knock of the lid and get into the tank, or knock the tank over.
  • 1. Your tank already has too many fish. Goldfish get big. They are descendants of a type of carp that the Chinese were originally breeding for food. While many including myself have slowly killed goldfish in 2 gallon setups as kids, if you want the fish to live full lives you will need to move them into a 55 gallon.

    2. There is debate among fish keepers on whether it is better to change smaller amounts more frequently or larger amounts less often. I normally do 25% tank changes once per week. 100% tank changes are frowned upon because it removes nitrifying bacteria from your tank.

    3. Yes. Unless you have another means of providing your fish with oxygen, ie. plants, you should keep your pump running all the time.

    4. You can yell at your cats when you see them looking at the tank, and hope they take the hint. If that doesn't work, I think there are some cat repellents for sale at pet shops.
  • goldfish need aproximaltly 2 gallons per fish when little and they get huge so i would only recomend keeping one goldfish in you mini tank. if you only had one in there you could have maybe one ottocinclus. common plecos also get huge so those are also not good fish to house in a "mini" tank!! happy fish keeping!!!

  • FIRST OF ALL YOUR TANK IS TOO SMALL FOR 4 GOLDFISH!! AND I WOULD NOT GET A PLECO FOR THAT SIZE TANK! THEY GROW TO BE 24INCHES. IF ANYTHING GET A BIGGER TANK TO HOUSE YOUR GOLDFISH I WOULD SO AT LEAST A 20 GALLON TO START OFF WITH BUT U WILL STILL NEED A BIGGER TANK IN THE FUTURE. A GOOD ALGAE EATING FISH THAT DOESN'T GET VERY BIG IS A GOLDEN ALGAE EATER OR A ALGAE EATER. ALSO AN OTOCINCLUS. WISH U THE BEST OF LUCK
  • Tanks too small

Take the fish back to the local fish shop and save their lives!!

Could you spend 24 hours a day for your entire life in your toilet?????
